Glossary / GTMAlso: TAM

Total Addressable Market

Understanding the total addressable market is crucial for B2B sales teams as it helps them identify all possible opportunities to grow their business. This includes identifying new markets, customer segments, and geographic regions that have not yet been tapped.

In practice, determining the total addressable market involves conducting thorough market research, analyzing customer data, and considering competitive landscapes. AI agents can assist in this process by collecting and analyzing data, but ultimately, human approval is required for any customer-facing actions.

TAM is usually estimated top-down (industry size times your share of wallet) or bottom-up (possible accounts times average contract value), with the bottom-up build being the more defensible for a B2B SaaS plan. TAM sets the ceiling; SAM and SOM narrow it to what you can realistically serve and win. Clean account data is what makes a bottom-up TAM trustworthy, since a list full of duplicates or bad firmographics inflates the count.

How should TAM be calculated?

Bottom up wherever possible: count the companies that match your ideal customer profile and multiply by realistic annual contract value. Top down, starting from a published industry figure and applying a percentage, produces a number that is easy to generate and hard to defend, because the percentage is doing all the work and nobody can check it.

What is the difference between TAM, SAM, and SOM?

TAM is everyone who could ever buy the category. SAM is the portion you can actually serve given your product, geography, and segment. SOM is what you could realistically capture in a defined period given your go-to-market capacity. TAM is a framing number for strategy; SOM is the one that should inform a plan.

What is TAM actually useful for?

Deciding whether a market is worth entering, and sizing segments against one another. It is close to useless for setting targets, because the constraint on next year revenue is your capacity to reach and serve customers, not the theoretical size of the pool. A large TAM answers whether there is room to grow, not whether you will.
