Glossary / GTMAlso: ICP

Ideal Customer Profile

Identifying an ICP is crucial for effective go-to-market strategies because it allows sales and marketing teams to focus their efforts on the most promising accounts. This targeted approach leads to higher conversion rates, more efficient resource allocation, and ultimately, greater customer success and retention.

In practice, the ICP guides everything from market segmentation and lead generation to sales prospecting and content creation. AI agents are increasingly used to analyze vast datasets, identify common traits among best customers, and even suggest potential ICP refinements or target accounts, though any customer-facing actions based on these insights require a human approval gate.

What is the difference between an ICP and a buyer persona?

An ICP describes a company; a persona describes a person inside it. The ICP decides which accounts are worth pursuing at all, using firmographic, technographic, and behavioural traits. The persona shapes how you talk to the individuals once the account is in play. Teams that conflate them end up targeting the right job titles at the wrong companies.

How should an ICP be built?

From your own closed-won data rather than from aspiration. Look at which accounts renewed and expanded, not only which ones signed, and find what they share. An ICP derived from wins tells you where you are strong; an ICP derived from a target market tells you where you would like to be, and only one of those is evidence.

What are the signs an ICP is wrong?

Healthy win rates followed by poor retention, long implementation cycles that keep exceeding estimates, and support load concentrated in one segment. All three indicate you are selling successfully to companies your product does not actually serve well, which is expensive in a way that pipeline metrics will not show you.
