Kill Switch

A kill switch is the backstop for the failures your guardrails did not predict. Autonomy should also degrade in steps rather than all-or-nothing: full autonomy for low-stakes actions, approval-only when something looks off, read-only during an investigation, hard stop when required.

The measure of this control is not whether the button exists. It is how many minutes pass between someone noticing a problem and the agent being fully stopped. Run the drill quarterly, like a backup restore.

What makes a kill switch real rather than theoretical?

Three properties. It is central, so one action stops every agent rather than requiring you to find and disable each one. It is complete, meaning it revokes live tokens and cancels queued and in-flight actions rather than only preventing new runs. And it has been tested, because a control exercised for the first time during an incident is a control you are discovering, not using.

Why is disabling the agent not enough?

Because stopping the loop does not undo what is already moving. Actions already queued can still execute, in-flight calls can still land, and credentials the agent issued or holds remain valid until they are explicitly revoked. A stop that only prevents the next decision leaves everything already decided to run to completion.

Who should be able to trigger it?

Anyone on call, not only the person who built the system. Kill switches that require a specific engineer, a specific console, or a specific approval chain reliably fail at three in the morning. Speed of exercise is the whole value of the control, so the access model should optimise for that rather than for preventing an unnecessary pause.
