Intent Data

Intent data is crucial because it helps B2B go-to-market teams move beyond traditional lead scoring based on firmographics or demographics alone. By identifying companies and individuals actively engaging with content related to their solutions, sales and marketing can prioritize outreach to those most likely to buy, significantly increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of their campaigns.

In practice, intent data is gathered from various sources, including third-party content consumption, website visits, and event registrations, indicating specific research patterns. This intelligence allows sales teams to craft timely, highly relevant messages and marketing to deliver targeted campaigns. Increasingly, AI agents are used to analyze intent signals, suggest next best actions, and even draft personalized outreach messages, though a human approval gate is essential for all customer-facing communications to ensure accuracy, tone, and compliance.

What is the difference between first-party and third-party intent data?

First-party intent is behaviour on your own properties: pages visited, documentation read, pricing viewed, trials started. Third-party intent is research activity observed elsewhere and sold to you, usually at account level. First-party is far more reliable and far smaller. Third-party gives coverage you could not otherwise get, at the cost of precision.

Why does intent data disappoint so often?

Because a signal is treated as a reason to contact someone rather than as a reason to look. Account-level intent rarely tells you who researched, why, or whether they have any authority, and outreach that announces you noticed their research tends to unsettle people. Used as prioritisation it works. Used as a trigger for automated messaging it usually does not.

What has to happen before an intent signal is actioned?

Suppression. Check the signal against your CRM before anything fires, so existing customers, open opportunities, and contacts already in an active sequence are removed. This is the step teams skip when they automate intent, and it is how current customers end up receiving cold outbound about a product they already pay for.
