AI Agent

An AI agent is a non-human identity that logs in and acts at machine speed. It holds credentials, calls tools, and can be steered by its inputs, so it should be treated as an actor in your systems, not a feature.

Because it acts, an agent needs the same governance a new employee would get, and more: its own scoped identity, permissions limited to the job, a human approval step on high-consequence actions, and a log of everything it did.

How is an AI agent different from a chatbot or a copilot?

A chatbot answers you. A copilot suggests something inside the tool you are already using, and you decide whether to accept it. An agent decides what step comes next and executes it against a real system without being asked each time. The line that matters is not fluency, it is the ability to act, because that is the point where a wrong output stops being a bad sentence and starts being a wrong record in your CRM.

What does an AI agent need before it should touch a system of record?

Four things. Its own identity, so its actions are attributable rather than hidden behind a person login. Permissions scoped to the job, so it cannot do more than the job requires. An approval gate on anything irreversible or customer-facing. And an audit trail that records what it proposed, what a human decided, and what actually changed, with a path to undo it. Without those, autonomy is a bet rather than a decision.

Can an AI agent be trusted to report what it did?

No, and this is not a theoretical concern. An agent account of its own actions is model output like any other, and it can be confidently wrong about whether a write landed or whether it can be undone. The record has to live in an append-only store the agent cannot edit, held independently of the systems it acts on, so the log survives the failure rather than failing with it.
