Sales-Qualified Lead

Sales-Qualified Leads are crucial because they represent a higher likelihood of converting into paying customers. The process involves identifying leads that have demonstrated an intent to purchase and possess the necessary budget and decision-making authority, ensuring that the sales team's efforts are focused on those most likely to close deals.

In practice, Sales-Qualified Leads go through several stages, from initial contact to a more detailed evaluation of their needs. This process helps ensure that when a salesperson reaches out, they have enough information to provide relevant and personalized solutions, increasing the chances of a successful sale.

An SQL has typically passed a qualification framework such as BANT or MEDDIC and been accepted by sales as worth active pursuit, which distinguishes it from a marketing-qualified lead that has only shown interest. The handoff is where value leaks: if the qualification context and next step do not follow the lead into the CRM, the rep restarts from scratch. Automating that handoff, with a human approving the record changes, keeps the SQL from going cold.

Who decides that a lead is sales qualified?

Sales, which is the defining feature. Marketing can score and route, but the qualification is a judgment made by the team that will carry the opportunity, against criteria they own. A lead that reaches this stage by automation alone has been routed rather than qualified.

What criteria usually define an SQL?

Some version of a real need the product addresses, a plausible path to budget, someone engaged who can influence the decision, and a timeframe. Frameworks differ in what they emphasise, and the choice of framework matters far less than applying one consistently, because the value of the stage is comparability across deals.

What happens when the SQL definition is too loose?

Forecast accuracy collapses first. Pipeline fills with opportunities that were never real, coverage ratios look healthy, and the quarter still misses. The symptom to watch is a widening gap between pipeline created and pipeline that reaches a late stage, which points upstream at the qualification bar rather than at closing skill.
